Mechanism of Action

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is a water-soluble vitamin that the body cannot make and must obtain externally. Milo-Lab supplies it as methylcobalamin, the ready-to-use coenzyme form, rather than synthetic cyanocobalamin that first has to be converted in the cell. B12 acts as a cofactor for two essential enzymes. As methylcobalamin it drives methionine synthase, which regenerates methionine from homocysteine and supplies the methyl groups needed for DNA, RNA and neurotransmitter synthesis; a shortfall here raises homocysteine and impairs the folate cycle. As adenosylcobalamin it drives methylmalonyl-CoA mutase in the mitochondria, a step in the breakdown of odd-chain fatty acids and certain amino acids that feeds the citric-acid cycle and energy production. B12 is also required for the maturation of red blood cells in the bone marrow and for maintaining the myelin sheath that insulates nerve fibres, which is why deficiency shows up as fatigue, megaloblastic anaemia and peripheral neuropathy.
